Ben East - GB Athlete - Javelin

Ben East and Luke AngellBen is a member of Team Kennet and has been competing in javelin since he was 11 years old. At Team Kennet, he is coached by fellow competitor and teammate Luke Angell.

At the 2018 UK Javelin Carnival held at Loughborough, Ben broke the UK U15 (600g) javelin record with a throw of 66.17m, finishing the season as UK U15 number 1, with the current British record of 70.66m.

In 2019, he had a best throw of 70.02m (700g javelin) and was Berkshire County & Schools champion, finishing the year as UK U17 number 1.

In 2020, Ben was again UK U17 number 1 with a best throw of 73.04m (700g javelin).  However, there were very few competitions due to lock-down restrictions.

In 2021, he moved into the U20 age group, now throwing the full 800g Olympic javelin. He was South of England U20 Inter-counties champion, with a throw of 61.53m.

In 2022, Ben competed for Team GB at the U20 World Championships in Cali, Columbia.  He also won a silver medal at the British Senior Championships as a junior athlete, aged just 18 years, with a throw of 73.49m: his best of the season. Ben also began a Mechanical Engineering Degree at Loughborough University, where he is being coached by John Trower with the university’s other javelin athletes.

In 2023, Ben became the British Senior Javelin Champion and BUCS champion and finished the season with a best throw of 74.03m to win the England U23 championship. In August, he went to Poland to compete in a lower tier of the Diamond League for the first time, finishing fifth; amazing experience for him.

In 2024, he won a silver medal at the British Senior Championships and retained his English U23 and BUCS titles with a seasons and personal best throw of 75.85m. Ben also won his first international competition at the Budapest Open and finished the season as UK number 1.

Looking forward to 2025, John Trower became Ben’s lead coach and he retains Luke Angell as his club coach.  He has qualified for the U23 European Throws Cup in Cyprus and is aiming to qualify for the European U23 Championships in Bergen, Norway, for which he needs to throw 77.50m.  His first competition is the UK Winter Long Throws championships in March.
